President Victor Tomlinson

Q. Mr. President as your administration starts a second term what has been the past year been like?

•  Schools -well run leagues, but we need more schools involved. With Hockey being offered a major at GCF college we hope this will enhance the development of hockey in more schools.

•  Clubs -competitions were not as successful as we wanted, too long and drawn out, unclear competition rules led to some discontent, and the indoors although short and tight, needed a full size court to play (UTECH was too small and National Arena too expensive) We started the u21 clubs league, for the first time. This will be a permanent fixture on the competitions calendar for years to come. Clubs are encouraged to recruit the large numbers of youngsters leaving the schools without a club to continue their hockey playing careers.

•  International -relatively active year for the men's, two overseas tournaments. Moderate performance: now we know where we are positioned in the region. Women fairly successful in their only outing in Trinidad , silver medal. Shows they are near the top, but it will be hard work to stay there! Dana Mae Crawford (VP) selected to PAHF Development committee, Valerie Hall returned to competitions committee and yours truly elected to the Board of Directors of PAHF.

•  Administrational-instability in the male VP position weakened the board. Nicholas Brown served towards the end, position filled by Richard "Wizzy" Wisdom at elections. We have great expectations from Wizzy. Our communication with the fraternity needs improvement and our new secretary Rod "Jahson" LueShing affirmed that he is ready fro the task. Funding continues to be an issue and it is imperative that a finance committee be fully functional in the New Year.  We strived to improve our umpiring and Technical cadre, with limited success. We have to step this up next year as we must develop international umpires within a year.

•  Q. What vision do you have for hockey in Jamaica in 2008?

•  Schools -expansion in the number of schools that play the game by devising new strategies to overcome the cost hurdle to the playing of hockey

•  Clubs -clubs become better organized and run, and get individual sponsorships

•  International -continuing on our goal of qualifying for the Pan am Games of 2011, host international games in Jamaica to expose international hockey, an event not seen for more than 5yrs in Jamaica .

•  Administrational -get wider participation in the activities of the Federation by the membership. A lot of work has been done over the past years and we need to harvest the returns. The JHF Board must improve the communication with all stake holders to work harder to improve relationships within the community. Funding of the JHF is critically required and a finance committee must be in place to deal with this in 2008.

•  Q.  Will the Federation be hosting any international completion this year?

•  Schools -hope to have a boy's school team from the UK in early July, that will play an all-schools team and the champion schools teams if possible.

•  Clubs -better run and more incentives for competitions, shorter duration

•  International -U21 Pan Am Competitions in November, NEED to have national teams visit, hence we are working on this. Hope to have an international club team festival in July. Hope to have visiting hockey players play hockey and experience one of the many musical entertainment events at that time of the year.

We would like to thank you for your time a wish the Jamaica Hockey  Federation a successful 2008
