LEVEL 1 FIH HOCKEY COACHING CERTIFICATION COURSE
JULY 23 - 26, 2009

The Jamaica Hockey Federation (JHF) in association with the Olympic Solidarity Movement will be staging an International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) Level 1 Coach Certification Course between Thursday, July 23 and Sunday, July 26, inclusive. This certification is internationally recognized and is intended to certify 24 current active local hockey coaches.

This training session will be led by FIH Grade 1 Coach, Niall Sturrock (Scotland) and assisted by, FIH Level II certified coach, Philip Fernandes (Guyana) and Lizzie Sturrock (Scotland), a trainer of coaches.

The JHF board has identified several objectives for the sport directed at increasing the player base and quality of play in the sport. Chief among these is the development of our coaches who are entrusted with the introduction and development of the sport at all levels in the educational system as well as at the club and national level. This focus also coincides with a requirement by the Ministry of Education, communicated to schools in September of 2008, which indicated that all coaches with responsibility for running co-curricular/intra-mural programme's are to be certified to at least a level 1 standard.

Following this accreditation process, the JHF will mandate that all coaches of all teams in JHF sanctioned events must be certified to FIH Level 1.

CARIBBEAN CUP 2009 - POSTPONED!

President Victor TomlinsonThe JHF Board wishes to advise that a decision to postpone the Caribbean Cup, which was scheduled to take place from June 22 - 28, 2009, regrettably had to be made last week Thursday.
This was primarily due to the following reasons:

  • Withdrawal of three countries (Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana and Netherland Antilles),
  • Protracted delay by the Sports Development Foundation (SDF) to commit funding for the Tournament
  • Effects of the global and local economic crisis in securing additional sponsorship

Jamaica vs. Bermuda - Picture Alex MastersAs a part of our overall communication strategy, the national squad management teams and players were advised at a meeting last week Thursday, and since then other local and international interests are also being apprised.

Apart from hosting the first international hockey tournament in Jamaica in many years, the JHF would also have benefited from:

a) A visit from the FIH President, Mr. Leandro Negre
b) Two coaching courses; special PAHF High Performance and Biomechanics
c) Inaugural meeting of the new Caribbean Coaching Union being formed to develop and certify Caribbean coaches
d) Opportunity to expose local Umpires and Technical Officials in an International Competition
e) Infrastructure and facility upgrade which would allow us to host more tournaments in the future
f) Opportunity for our national players to perform in front of the "home" crowdJamaica vs. Brazil

The SDF says they are still supportive of such a tournament and so we will continue to lobby for a bankable commitment while at the same time work with PAHF for another suitable date on the Tournament Calendar.

National teams will remain in training as participation in the Simon Bolivar Tournament, Venezuela (Men) and the Hermana Mirabel Tournamemt, Dominican Republic (Women) in October and November respectively (which will provide international practice matches in preparation for the 2010 CAC Games) are possibilities, provided that we can identify the funding.
Meanwhile, on behalf of the JHF, we would like thank everyone for the time and effort that has been put in to developing the plans to this stage and hope that you will be able to come on board with us whenever a new date can be set for the tournament.

Intercollegiate

This year's intercollegiate competition will be very competitive. Defending women's champion Utech are the odds on favorite to repeat, as they have a compliment of seven national players past and present on their rooster. They are Dadreann Clarke, Krystal Reid, Lori McIntosh, Shana-Kay Tullonge, Shackera Williams and with former national player and national coach Dr. Michelle Holt , and top high school coach Andrea-Hoo Thomas they stand a very good chance of repeating. However Former national coach Danny James who coaches GC Foster will definitely try not to let this happen.

UWI under the guidance of former under 21national team, and former captain of the national senior team, coach Fabian Stewart will be seeking to retain the men's title and will going for the double this year with the women's team. UWI do has its compliment of national players, in Shakeela Elliott for the women and Orville Hicks for the men.
