JHF women's national coach to attend high performance coaching seminar

National coach Christine Barltley

Christine Bartley, coach of Jamaica's Senior Women's Team has been accepted to be among 25 coaches who will participate in the 2008 FIH High Performance Coaching Seminar to be held during the World Cup Qualifiers in Santiago, Chile. The course which will run from February 26 to March 4 is designed for high performance and development coaching of adult hockey players, and preparing teams at high level international competition.

The Head Conductor will be Rodolfo Mendoza , Argentina FIH Master Coach, assisted by FIH Master Coach Bert Bunnik from The Netherlands. In addition to the main conductors other Master Coaches and the Coaches of the participating teams will make individual presentations during the Course. All the conductors and presenters have impressive experience of international coaching and conducting Coaching Courses at top level around the world.

The conductors can recommend participants who perform well during the Course, after assessment of their performance and contribution during the course, for participation in a later FIH Final Coaching Seminar. At the Final Seminar there is the possibility that participants can further earn a nomination as FIH Coach or FIH Coach Grade l (Development or High Performance). To be an FIH Coach is an official and honorable recognition for a coach and also makes him eligible as conductor and expert for courses and other assignments of the FIH and the Continental Hockey Federations and Olympic Solidarity programs.

Christine who hails from Cumberland in Clarendon, was born at Spalding Public Hospital in the same parish, graduated from Cumberland All Age, Edwin Allen High and G.C. Foster College . Her outgoing nature and genuine love for sports and the outdoors led her to coaching and teaching. This has made it easy for her to bring the some of the motherly love and caring personality she has for her children Kimonie and Kareen, to coaching Jamaica Senior Women's team which recently won silver at the Caribbean Cup Championships in Trinidad & Tobago.

On returning form Chile this affable coach intends to learn "more about the game, especially tactical, and information that will help me to impart knowledge better to top class players", which most certainly speaks to the "Ladybirds". This will mean "spreading the information to other coaches and to try applying the lessons to my coaching style to improve the game we play locally". For this transformation to take root quickly, Coach Bartley expects to have "better playing facilities, more equipment to aid in technical and tactical development, good support team for the players, and getting players exposed to international competitions on a regular basis".

On returning from the High Performance Seminar, the national coach expects to continue the national programme and believes that "having the new knowledge and skills will enable me to better guide the ladies in improving their own skills, practically and theoretically, so that they will become better players locally and internationally. In her modest tone she is sure that it will also help her to better understand the players, so that she can better relate to their individual needs so they can perform to the best of their abilities at all times.

Even with all these plans, Coach Bartley is sure she will still be able to do what she enjoys apart from mentoring players, which are, "spending time with my children, listening to music and watching and playing hockey".
